Silva double gives Arsenal first win

Santiago Silva’s first two goals in an Arsenal de Sarandí shirt gave the club a priceless victory over Newell’s Old Boys, downing the Lepra 3-0 behind closed doors to mark the first time this year Martín Palermo’s men have taken all three points.

The Uruguayan striker, who has won titles in Argentina with Lanús, Vélez Sarsfield, Boca Juniors and Banfield, proved that he has not lost the goalscoring touch when he opened the scoring after 42 minutes. Silva struck with a fine diving header to connect with Fabián Múñoz’s cross.

Just three minutes after the break the forward hit again with almost a carbon copy of his first effort. Múñoz was again the provider, swinging the ball in low from the right, and Silva got down once more to beat Oscar Ustari and double the home team’s advantage.

The icing on the cake for Palermo came in injury time, when Silva began a counter-attack from Arsenal’s own penalty area. Ezequiel Ruiz, playing just his second professional match, finished off the move to round off an encouraging triumph in Sarandí.

Arsenal’s win moves them away from the foot of the Primera División, with six points from eight games – the remaining minutes of their clash against Aldosivi, suspended due to crowd violence when the Mar del Plata club were leading 1-0, are still to be completed.

Newell’s meanwhile lie in ninth position, having missed the chance to close on leaders Boca following yesterday’s draw with Nueva Chicago.
